Bet Dwarka

An island where devotion and maritime history meet.

The visible place

What you see today

Bet Dwarka combines an active Krishna temple and other shrines with the coast, settlements and working waters of an island. The shore photograph here shows its maritime setting; it is not an image of an excavated palace.

Sudarshan Setu now connects the island with Okha. Bet Dwarka remains a separate excursion from central Dwarka, rather than an extension of a walk around Jagat Mandir.

Living memory

Sacred association

Living pilgrimage tradition associates the island with Krishna’s residence. That devotional association gives the place its importance to many visitors. It does not by itself identify a particular surviving wall or present-day temple as his original dwelling.

History, carefully read

What is documented

Archaeological research has recorded pottery and other material from several periods on Bet Dwarka. A study published in Current Science in 2002 discusses this cultural sequence using thermoluminescence dating.

Research in the island’s waters has also examined anchors and material relevant to maritime exchange. These finds illuminate a long relationship with the sea. They should be interpreted by their own contexts and dates, without merging island archaeology with every submerged feature off mainland Dwarka.

Before you go

A little
orientation.

Plan Bet Dwarka as a separate journey from central Dwarka. Sudarshan Setu connects it with Okha; check local onward access and temple arrangements before travelling.
